Waters Edge HOA Events and a Full Season at the Equestrian Center

September 24, 2026

If you ask a Waters Edge resident what the community's social calendar looks like, most will point to the lakeside pavilion. It's the image on every listing photo: string lights, a fire pit, a dock beyond it catching the last of the sun. That picture is real. The equestrian center offers another source of activity in the neighborhood.

The Waters Edge Owners Association's public events listing shows two recurring community events: an annual picnic and an annual meeting. Meanwhile, inside the same gate, on Copelan Farm Road, a working barn has been running a full season of shows, lessons, and two active school teams, one of them a recent addition to the roster.

For residents, the association's calendar is one part of the picture. The following sections explore the equestrian center's facilities and programs.

Lake Oconee Equestrian Center at Waters Edge

Lake Oconee Equestrian Center sits inside Waters Edge, and it's easy to drive past if you're not looking for it. The facility runs a 150-foot by 250-foot lighted arena with jumps, a separate training-size dressage arena, a round pen, roughly 30 acres of pasture, and a 13-stall barn with climate-controlled space for boarders. That's not a backyard setup. It's a full boarding and training operation, and it happens to sit inside a residential gate rather than out on a rural highway.

The center offers private, semi-private, and group lessons, along with training, breaking, and rehab work for horses. For residents drawn to the equestrian side of Waters Edge, the center is a notable part of daily life.

Two Teams, One of Them a Recent Addition

Here's the detail that changes how the season reads at Waters Edge. Lake Oconee Equestrian Center has long hosted an Interscholastic Equestrian Association team through Gatewood School, fielding both a middle school and a high school squad. The IEA format is built around access rather than ownership. Riders don't bring their own horses. Horses and tack are supplied by the host barn and assigned to competitors by drawing lots, which means a student without a horse at home can still compete at the same level as one who boards year-round. Lake Oconee Equestrian Center is that host barn for Gatewood's riders.

The second team is newer. The center is now also home to a Georgia College and State University squad competing in the ISTA collegiate format, and the center's own site flags it as a recent addition to the lineup. That's a college program riding out of a residential subdivision's barn rather than a campus facility, which means Waters Edge residents now have two competitive show programs running through their own neighborhood barn instead of one.

If you've lived here through a few show seasons already, you may have noticed the center's programs have expanded with the addition of a second team.

Programs and Activities at the Center

Program Who Rides Current Status
IEA Gatewood Equestrian (Middle School) Local middle schoolers, no personal horse required Established team
IEA Gatewood Equestrian (High School) Local high schoolers, horses assigned by draw Established team
GCSU ISTA Team Georgia College and State University riders Recently added
Summer riding camps Kids new to horses, check-in at the on-site Roany Pony Cafe Seasonal, runs through summer
HOA-organized community events All residents Annual picnic, annual meeting

The table shows four activities associated with the equestrian center, alongside the two annual events listed by the association. Together, they illustrate different parts of community life in Waters Edge.

The Small Detail That Tells You Who This Is For

During camp season, families don't check in at a clubhouse or a front gate kiosk. They check in at the Roany Pony Cafe, the small on-site spot at the equestrian center where camp waivers get signed before kids head out for their first lesson in horse care and beginner riding technique. It's a detail that only shows up if you've actually been through the process, and it says something about the texture of the place. This isn't a resort amenity with a reservation system. It's a working barn with a coffee counter, and the coffee counter is where the season actually starts for a lot of families.

The HOA minutes and a listing's amenities section offer only part of the picture. The equestrian center's programs and camps provide another view of activity in Waters Edge.

Putting the HOA Events Calendar in Context

For a prospective buyer comparing Lake Oconee communities, the HOA events calendar is one part of the picture. Waters Edge's HOA description emphasizes rural scenery, wildlife, and open space. The equestrian center offers another source of activity, with shows, lessons, and teams alongside the events listed by the association.

For current residents, this is useful context for anyone new to the neighborhood: the equestrian center's programs are another part of local life beyond the pavilion.

What This Means If You're Already Here

If you moved to Waters Edge for the horses, you likely already know the barn's rhythm better than this piece can tell you. If you moved for the lake and the privacy and the horses were secondary, the barn's calendar is worth a closer look regardless. A college team riding out of your neighborhood barn is not something every Lake Oconee community can say, and it changes the kind of activity you'll see on the trails and in the arena parking area on any given afternoon.

The pavilion remains part of the community calendar, and the equestrian center now hosts two teams.
