"A place where families gathered, friends celebrated, stories were shared, and a community was built." That's how the owners of Oconee Brewing Company said goodbye in June 2025. Lake Oconee News reported that the farewell post listed "laughter, music, weddings, birthdays, local artists, live bands, festivals, charity events" as the things that had filled the red-brick building at 202 North West Street.
Read that list again and you have most of the fall schedule at Barrel & Rail, the venue that has since opened in the same building. Live bands, weddings, charity events and local history all come back this season. This time the building is set up as an event venue, so it comes back to life on specific dates, with tickets, and two of the county's long-running organizations have already booked their milestone celebrations there.
The building on North West Street has been reinvented more often than almost any address downtown. In a 2018 Georgia Trend profile, then-Main Street manager Kendrick Ward traced its history: "We have found tidbits that that building was not only a cotton warehouse, but before that, it was a bottling company that bottled Chero-Cola and other soft drinks."
Put in order, its lives look like this:
Ward made a joke in 2018 that holds up well today: the building had gone from bottling to cotton "and now it's back to another bottling facility." Barrel & Rail continues that pattern. The building keeps finding a new use that echoes an old one, and this time the echo is the brewery's role as a place to gather.
Local developer Bart VanStekelenburg is leading the project. He also sits on the Greensboro Downtown Development Authority. "Our vision is to create something that feels true to Greensboro but brings a new level of energy to the area," he told Lake Oconee News in April. "We are honoring the history here while building a place that becomes a centerpiece for the entire Lake Oconee community."
The general manager is Ken McCord, a longtime Greensboro resident many people will remember as the former owner of the Ripe Thing Market. So the brick and the Chero-Cola lettering go back almost a century, and the person running the place day to day comes from downtown's own retail history.
In April the venue was still in what Lake Oconee News called a "phased opening," with programming to be announced later. That changed on September 5, when a grand-opening night featured Departure, The Journey Tribute Band, and a full-service bar pouring beer, wine, spirits and cocktails. By October 14, Lake Oconee Life's roundup of what's new was calling Barrel & Rail downtown's "new home for live music and good times," complete with a full bar.
Barrel & Rail is built around events. The features reported in April are on-site parking, audiovisual equipment, catering facilities and layouts that adjust to the size of the crowd.
In practice, the calendar is how you get in. The venue's own ticketing runs through Ticket Tailor, and other events at the building are sold by the groups hosting them. If you want a drink in the old brewery courtyard, start by picking a date.
| Date | Event | Time | Tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday, Nov. 5 | Celebrating 30 Years "Gather for Good" | 6:00 p.m. listed start | $225 per person, limited |
| Friday, Nov. 13 | The Knights of Queen, Live at Barrel & Rail | Doors and bar 6:00 p.m., show 7:30 p.m. | $40 general admission plus fees and tax; $800 plus tax for a reserved table of eight |

The Knights of Queen night is the venue's own concert and its clearest public night out this fall. General admission is $40 before the $3.75 booking fee and $3.50 sales tax. The reserved table seats eight for $800 plus $64 in tax, which works out to $100 a seat before tax for a group that wants a guaranteed table.
The two events around that concert say the most about the building's new role. Both are milestone celebrations, and both chose Barrel & Rail.
Gather for Good turns 30 on November 5. The event listing describes "three decades of generosity, partnership, and meaningful community impact." The evening includes dinner, drinks, dancing, a dueling pianos performance and a paddle raise to fund work in the community "for the next generation." Tickets are limited, and registration is linked from the listing.
The Greene County Historical Society turns 50 on December 12. Its annual Tour of Homes covers homes and historic places around downtown Greensboro and includes a trolley ride. This year the ticket also gets you into the Society's Golden Anniversary Celebration, held from 4 to 6 p.m. to mark 50 years of preserving local history. The day begins and ends at Barrel & Rail. The listing says in-person tickets are available beginning October 17. Check the purchase details with the Historical Society directly, since the online ticket link has pointed to last year's tour page.
The pairing is a good fit. A historical society celebrating 50 years starts and ends its tour in a building that has been a soda bottler, a cotton warehouse and a brewery. And the brewery's farewell named charity events among the gatherings it hosted, so a 30-year community fundraiser picks up where that left off.
November 5 is the one crowded night downtown. The Lake Country Players open Come From Away that evening at Festival Hall, 201 North Main Street, with a 7 p.m. curtain, and the show runs through November 8. That puts two ticketed downtown crowds out on the same evening. If you're going to the fundraiser, the later performances of Come From Away that weekend leave the show available to you.
If you're buying flowers for either evening, Designs by Brandy Floral Studio is new to 120 North Main Street and sells fresh and silk arrangements.
When Leslie Clark talks with Greensboro homeowners, a historic building's next chapter usually comes up as part of what makes downtown feel like home. If you'd like to hear what downtown projects like Barrel & Rail could mean for your home's value, or you just want to compare notes before the Tour of Homes, Leslie Clark is happy to talk it through.
