The first is the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, a women's tournament that ran February 20 to 21, 2026, drawing a fifteen-team field that included Boston College, Virginia Tech, Tulane, Mercer, and East Tennessee State, playing the course at its full par-72, 7,400-yard championship setup.

The second, and the one with the deeper pedigree, is the Linger Longer Invitational. It returned to Great Waters March 19 to 22, 2026, marking its 20th anniversary and its 13th time being contested specifically on this course. Co-hosted by the University of Georgia, Mercer University, and Kennesaw State University, it runs three rounds of 54-hole stroke play with both individual and team competition, and it is open to spectators at no cost.

The Résumé That Makes This More Than a Nice Amenity

Over its two decades, the tournament has served as a launching pad for players who went on to define the modern PGA Tour: Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, Harris English, and Nick Dunlap all played the event as college golfers before their names meant anything outside amateur circles.

The list got a fresh entry this year. Jacob Bridgeman, a Clemson golfer who competed in the Linger Longer Invitational, won the 2026 Genesis Invitational on the PGA Tour, one of the sport's marquee non-major events. That is not a résumé line from a decade ago. That is a player who walked this specific course as an unranked college competitor and then won on tour in the same calendar year the tournament celebrated its 20th anniversary at Great Waters.

The University of Alabama's Cory Whitsett also holds a distinction worth knowing if you live nearby: he won the individual title three years running, from 2011 to 2013, a streak that has not been matched since.

None of this happens by accident. When Jack Nicklaus and his design team finished the course's 18-month renovation in 2019, rebuilding it from the ground up with new drainage, reworked bunkers, and sightlines opened back up toward the lake, Nicklaus described the result as a course with more variety and more teeth than the original 1992 layout, one that was, in his words, "really strong again." A course built to test elite players stays on the radar of the programs that recruit them, which is part of why Georgia, Mercer, and Kennesaw State keep coming back rather than rotating through other Reynolds venues.

During championship rounds, Reynolds Lake Oconee posts live status updates for each course, and Great Waters typically shows as closed or cart-path-only through the morning shotgun start, with normal member play resuming for afternoon tee times once the field has moved through. If you are used to an early tee time during tournament week, expect to shift it later or play one of the other six courses in the meantime.

This is a short-term inconvenience with a clear payoff. Unlike the LPGA Drive On Championship the course hosted in 2020, which had no spectators at all due to the short notice and logistics of putting together a tour stop on a compressed timeline, both the Linger Longer Invitational and the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational are structured from the start to welcome people walking the property. The Linger Longer Invitational has held the same March window for two decades, and the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational came through this February. Both events were open to spectators without a ticket. The back nine, where most of the course tracks the Lake Oconee shoreline, gives the best vantage points for watching approach shots into greens that are guarded on one side by water and on the other by the kind of bunkering Nicklaus rebuilt from scratch in 2019.
